Previously we did look at the approximate size of the internet as determined by google. Now the next question we need to ask is where is everyone going on the internet?

To answer this question we need to use a website whose whole job is to answer this question.

Most of you proabably haven’t heard of Alexa, www.Alexa.com is a website devoted to tracking popularity and trends of the internet.

Today we are going to spend some time navigating through Alexa’s site and use it to answer some questions about the internet. Answer the following questions in a blog post on your own site, later you can compare your results with others in the class.

Questions

1) As you arrive at the site you see a graph of the latest movers and shakers, click on the link that says more of movers and shaker to get a more detailed view. Choose 3 of the positive gainers and 3 of the losers and determine why they might be gainning some momentum this week.

2) From the main page you can also view the traffic ratings for the top 100 sites in any country and the top 500 in the world. Compare the top ten of these sites to find the most popular website in the world and see differences between Canada and the world. What are the sites that are less popular to canadians but more popular to the rest of the world.

Now we are going to take a more detailed look at the sites in Canada’s top 100.

3) How many sites are devoted to sociall networking?

4) How many sites are for search?

5) How many of the sites make their profits in product sales (not services)?

6) What sites of the top 100 have blogs? Are there any devoted entirely to blogging?

7) Find 3 blogs you have recently visited or that are of interest to you and compare how they match up in Alexa. Which is the most popular blog? What rank did it get in the world?
