Inside Your PC

Ever wondered what’s going on inside that metal box on your desk? Why that coffee holder that pops out from it dosen’t quite fit the coffee cups? Why the guy at the store told you that “this one has _________ of ______”. And what all those crazy word and terms are that get thrown around when your trying to get your computer fixed.

To answer these questions I thought I would leave it up to my grade nine technology classes. Bellow are their interpretations of what parts of a computer do.

/*** Remove later ****/
Students will be asked to select a computer part then investigate what that part does and how it interacts with the rest of the computer. Respond to the following questions when making your post.
What does the part do?
How does the component interact with the rest of the computer?
What are some of the features?
What specs determine the quality of the component? (size, speed, space, look, price)
What is the price range of these components?
/***Remove later ***/

CPU

RAM
Mother Board
Hard Drive
Hard drives range in price from around 50$ to about 400$. Usually, the higher you go up in price, the more storage space will get in your hard drive. The hard drive interacts with most of the computer because it basically holds all your data. Some hard drives are portable and they allow you to take your data with you to another computer.

Optical Drives (CD,DVD,Blue Ray)
USB
Power Supply
Sound Card
Video Card
Printer
Scanner
Mouse
The mouse is the weird shaped part that you use with your hand. The mouse lets you control where the cursor goes, and lets you click on all of the icons on your desktop.

Some features that they have for mice now are scroll wheels(to scroll down pages), wireless connections, hand-size mice, motion sensing mice, and mice with built-in keyboards…. some of the buttons the mice have on them are ball movement for a smoother movement with the cursor, the back button on the side of your mouse to beat the hassle of moving the curser to the top of the internet page, and also the boss button that lets you minimize all of your programs you have open.

A good quality mouse should feel comfortable in your hand, easy to operate, and interface easily with your computer. Most mice fit into a price range between twelve dollars and two hundred dollars.

Monitor
The monitor is the big square/rectangular part that allows you to see everything you do on the computer. The computer would basically useless without the monitor because you wouldn’t be able to see anything. It’s like trying to open the internet with your monitor turned off. The screens can range from 13? to 24? and above.

There are many components which determine the quality of a monitor. First off, the bigger screen isn’t always better. It may have a big screen but it could be low quality. Resolution is how well the picture come’s out, and the high end monitors run anywhere from 1920×1200 dots per inch (dpi) and up. Frame rate also plays a big role. It is how fast and how smoothly the pictures can come up and move on the screen. You would need high frame rates if you play high graphic games etc. Your monitor should have a frame rate of around 40 fps(frames per second) .

Monitors range in style aswell, some wide screens, flat screens, touch screens, and some that actually look like TV’s. A lot of the newer monitors are flat screen. The brand of the screen also has a huge role in price, don’t be fooled. You can get a monitor made by a less known company of the same quality for sometimes half the price.

Now, how much do they cost? Well, they can start out around $150 for a 14-17?. 19? Can cost about $200-$300, and everything above can cost from $300 all the way up to $1000+!

Keyboard
Case
Heat Sinks
CPU Fan
Cooling
There are many different cooling systems available. Their primary function is to remove the heat created by the computer. The cooling system does not directly interact with the rest of the computer but it plays a vital role in keeping the computer working. Due to the wide range of different methods used to cool down computers it is hard to give exact features on each one. All cooling systems must have the ability to disperse heat from the computer. Some of the features you should look for when buying a cooling system for your computer are its appearance, this is especially important when you have a clear case that every one can see into and its ability to keep your system cool. In the two examples below I explain how the lowest end and highest end cooling systems work. Example in the lower end you have simple DC fans that cost around $2.00 that just circulate the air which allows the CPU or RAM to dissipate its heat in to the air surrounding it. Unlike the higher systems which can cost up to $300 that uses liquids that are passed though the heat sink which allows the liquid coming from the CPU or the RAM to dissipate its heat it to the air surrounding the heat sink, then the heat sink uses one or more fans to remove the hot air from the computer case.
IDE Cables
SATA
Firewire
Digital Camera
WebCam
Webcams are cameras attached to your computer that allow you to share live video with someone else on another computer. If you have a microphone on your computer you can also talk to the other person. With a webcam you can also take pictures, and make video’s.

Webcam’s work by connecting them to to a USB port, and normally having to install a cd that came with it after. When taking pictures with the webcam they will normally save as JPEG or MPEG files. Normally people use webcam’s when they have instant messaging like msn and yahoo so that they can be in a video call and talk to and see the other person.

As for prices it varies depending on a lot of things such as the quality, speed, look, price, and the company that makes it. They can cost anywhere from $20 - $600 depending on how much you want to invest in one and what your looking for in a webcam. A cheap webcam might not be the best camera but it might not be the worst, it depends how much you’ll be using it.

A good webcam to try and look for would be one with a good quality lends, Good picture and video resolution, a good frame rate and zooming for pictures, good speed that won’t freeze as much if you move quickly or if your on different programs at once, able to change the settings easy, and good small size if you want it to sit ontop of your computer.

Smart Board
Video Capture Card

Video capture cards allows you to get tv signals, record video, and playback video. The cards are made to plug into the expanison slots in a personal or server computer. These cards don’t have dedicated hardware for the processing video unlike the vidoe editing cards.

    Computer Monitor:

The monitor is the big square/rectangular part that allows you to see everything you do on the computer. The computer would basically useless without the monitor because you wouldn’t be able to see anything. It’s like trying to open the internet with your monitor turned off. Some of the features of the monitor are:
-The screen which can range from 13″ to 24″ and above.
-On the back, front or side of the computer are four or five buttons. They allow you to turn on/off the monitor, dim/brighten the screen, adjust where the center of the screen is, change languages etc.

There are many components which determine the quality of a monitor. First off, the bigger screen isn’t always better. It may have a big screen but it could be low quality. Resolution is how well the picture come’s out, and the high end monitors run anywhere from 1920×1200 resolution and up. Frame rate also plays a big role. It is how fast and how smoothly the pictures can come up and move on the screen. You would need high frame rates if you play high graphic games etc. Your monitor should have a frame rate of around 40 fps(frames per second) . It is also good to have a monitor with a good refresh rate. It is the rate of which the computer refreshes the image per second. Measured in Hz.

The look of the monitor also play’s a fairly big role in how much it is going to cost. There are some wide screens, flat screens, touch screens, and some that actually look like TV’s. A lot of the newer monitors are flat screen And the old ones used to be about one and a half feet long(width wise). The brand of the screen also has a huge role in price, don’t be fooled. You can get a monitor made by a less known company of the same quality for a maximum of half the price.

Now, how much do they cost? Well, they can start out around $150 for a 14-17″. 19″ Can cost about $200-$300, and everything above can cost from $300 all the way up to $1000+!

So, when you’re looking for a new monitor, don’t be fooled into buying a big-name commercial company. You have save up to half the amount you were going to pay and get the same quality!!

    Floppy Disk Drive:

this wasn’t that hard because floppy disk drives haven’t really changed in about 15 or 20 years.
i went to tigerdirect.com to look at some of theirs floppy disk drives and what looked like the best one was the CybertronPC Imerium XV3080 3u Rackmount Server designed for tons of space………..but it costs $10,399.99.
most of the floppy drives i saw costed between $25 and $45 and the best ones had at least 2.0 MB of space.

A hard drive price range is around the lowest 54.99 to about 400.00 in this view on this website, basically the higher you go up the price range is more when ether its better quality of the hard drive, basically it just holds more or for features that would be the most important thing. The hard drive interacts with most of the computer because it basically holds all your memory for whatever reason you need memory on a computer if you want to save something. The features of this hard drive that I would most likely buy is a Lacie Mobile Disk 250GB External Hard Drive for going places cause it’s a reasonable price and its a 250 gigabyte hard drive so its not bad of a price for being portable of a 139.99$ hard drive, if you wanted a computer or whatever up at your cottage or where ever you go most often other then your house that you stay at to relax and you would need a computer sometimes or most of the time.

Then for 1 at my house I would get one at has a lot of memory for games and whatever I need it for and if there’s anyone of my friends that need it I wouldn’t have to worry about running out of memory or my computer getting very slow, also this would make it go faster if I had more memory and that one is called a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB Hard Drive. This hard drive not only holds a huge amount of memory it also is a reasonable price and the most reliable disc drive around and this is the max of what it holds. The part would make the computer run faster and make your life a hole of a heck better.

    318 two-hour DVD-quality movies or
    - 1000 hours of VHS-quality video or
    - 660 days of around-the-clock MP3 audio or
    - 276,500 vivid digital photos or
    - 1600 action-packed games.

This hard drive is small in size and massive in memory the price is very reasonable witch costing only 109.99 and it does not take up much space the look is half descent but what it runs on and how much memory holds is the main thing!

A Capture Card is located inside your computer that helps to secure digital data. They are designed to plug directly into expanded slots in your computers and servers.

The price of these capture cards can range in price anywhere from $24.99 all the way to $134.99.

Video capture cards let you hook up your old VHS to your PC and you can burn your video files to a Cd, DVD or Blu-ray.

    Capture Cards:

    - Easy to install
    - Watch TV on your PC without a delay
-Capture Rate: 30 frames per second.
A good capture card should be easy to intall without any problems. You should also be able to watch TV on your PC without a delay. You should also be able to burn files to your CD, DVD, or Blu-ray without any problems or delays. And you should be able to hook it up on your own. So you if your thinking of getting a new Capture Card keep these things in mind.

    Digital Cameras:

A digital camera is a camera that can record videos with sound or take a still photograph,
or do both digitally by recording images on a light sensitive sensor. The first digital camera prototype
was developed in 1975 by Eastman Kodak engineer Steven Sasson. It was the size of a large toaster and weighed
nearly 4 kg. The images were black and white and the resolution was .01 megapixels. It took 23 seconds to record the
first photograph. But they have come along way since then.
Digital cameras have lots of features that are not included on a regular film camera.
They can display the photograph or video immediately after it is recorded,
take thousands of photographs and videos on a single small memory device, edit
pictures while they are still on the camera and delete the videos and photographs
allowing re-use of the space they occupied.
There are many types of digital cameras. Compact digital cameras are easier to carry around because they are so small
and portable. Bridge cameras are higer-end cameras that basically look like a digital single lens
reflex camera but have some more features. Line scan cameras have a camera mechanism containing a line-scan sensor chip and
    focusing device.
Prices on digital cameras vary depending on what you are looking for.
Digital cameras can be under $100 dollars and still take quality pictures.
Some can go as high $37,000. The price depends on what qualities you desire such as how much you’ll use it,
the look of it, the weight, the megapixels, the quality of the photographs and how easy it is to put your
images on a computer. The more complex, the more money you pay although not all expensive cameras take the
    best pictures.

keyboard: The keyboard is an input device which lets people type things maybe to other people or if your doing homework and stuff like that.

The keyboard interacts with the rest of the computer by allowing you to go into a site then type what you need to do.

They have many different types of keyboards such as gaming keyboards, virtual keyboards, and keyboards with extra keys. The gaming keyboard would have different keys that would allow you to do things in a computer game that you couldn’t do with a regular keyboard. Keyboards with extra keys have things such as buttons on the sides which allow you to access the internet without clicking a button. A touchscreen keyboard has half the screen the keyboard and the other half is the place where you are typing. All you do is touch the screen and the letters will come up on the screen.

The price could determine if the keyboard is good or not. If the keyboard is flat then it will be more comfortable on the persons hands which will make more people want to buy the keyboard. If the keyboard is wireless then people would want them so that there isn’t a hassle with all the wire getting tangled.

The price could be determined by whether the keyboard is wireless and if so then it would be from about 50 to 70 dollars. If you were looking for a top of the line laptop, you can find some for more than 1000 dollar and some for less than 300 dollars which wouldn’t be as good as one as the one for 1000 dollars. The look of the keyboard will also determine the price of the keyboard . If it is just a normal looking keyboard then the look won’t matter to much but if it is like a gaming keyboard which has a lcd screen on it then the will go up because of that.

    RAM (Random Access Memory)

Random Access Memory (RAM) is the part of the computer that lets programs store temporary data. The Ram allows the stored data to be accessed in any order The Ram interacts with the rest of the computer by communicating with the running programs. Some features of RAM are amount of storage of data, and the speed it can be read at. The specifications that determine the quality of the Ram are the size, speed and price. You can buy a basic 512K Ram for a low as $30 but to buy a 1GB it could be $150.

The printer is a computer hardware usually used to print media or documents onto paper or transcripts. Some features of the printer is a scanner used to copy a page onto the computer or to print another copy of the page. A digital camera hook up used to print pictures onto paper and a fax machine built in to fax documents to another printer.

The monitor and the USB connection are some things that interact with the printer. Some of the newer printers use the USB connection to hook the printer to the computer and the monitor.

There are many components that determine the quality like the price. The more money you spend doesn’t mean the better it depends what you want to use it for. Scanners, fax machines, USB connection, camera hook-ups and memory card slots will bring the price up when you buy a printer. Another quality is the look you can buy printers in different shapes, sizes, colours etc. it all depends on what you want it to look like .

The price range can vary anywhere from 50 to 3000 dollars. if you keep adding more features to your printer the price will go up if you want less feature on you printer the price will go down.

    Scanner :
A scanner is a devise that scans images, handwriting, printed text, or an object and put’s it on the computer. It allows you to take your image and share it with everyone. It saves paper and it just makes it easier. The flatbed scanner is most common.
It interacts with the computer by allowing to take things from the scanner into the computer. You can post whatever it is, and post it to wherever you’d like.
Other kinds of scanners planetary scanners, which take pictures of books and documents. 3D scanners are used for making 3D models of objects. Bar code scanners are usually hand held devises and are used in retail. Business card scanners easily allow you to capture contact information directly from business cards.
A flatbed scanner is the most common for reasons, because it works really well.
You can get an all-in-one that has a printer, scanner, and a photocopier. You can get a handheld so you can personally scan your object.
The price range can be any where around between $60- more than $800.

Sound cards are computer extension cards that go in the back of the computer near or beside the ethernet card and other computer extension cards. For those who don’t want to pay someone else to install their sound card, but don’t trust themselves to do it there are sound cards that plug into the USB jack on the computer.
Sound cards can enhance the sound on a computer. Higher quailty sound and Polphony (more than one distinct voice/sound played simultaneouly without the sounds blending into one another). It will connect to your speakers through an TRS connector (looks like a headphone jack) or a RCA connector (one of those coloured plugs that plug anything into your tv.
With a sound card you can do more multimedia applications music composition, editing audio etc.
For what kind of sound card you need you have to consider what kind sound card you want and how much you’re will to part with.
    4.1 stero surround sound $20-$50
    5.1 stero surround sound $15-$75
    7.1 stero surround sound $20-$330

CD ROM - What does a cd rom do ? A Cd rom is a pre-pressed, compact disk that was originaly made in 1985, but was only met for music to store or a play back. A cd rom can only read momory, or you could upload data from cds or momory cards. Your probably thinking who built it? Well it was devoloped by Sony and Philips adapted this format, to hold any form of data.

How does the componet interact with the rest of the computer? The cd rom can upload data from a disc and transfer it on to the hard drive so you can see it on the computer screen.

What are some of the features? There are a few features about a cd rom. There is a slid out trey, that is shape like a disc. Then you press a botton and the trey closes and then uploades on to the computer screen.

Whats the quality? Size - Small
    Speed - Pretty fast
    Space - 2352 bytes
    Look - Black Trey
    Price - 200$

How much is a cd rom ? The averge cd rom is about 200 dollars - to 500 dollars, it depends on the make.

    the mother board

The mother board is the main component to the computer.
It holds the main components like the ram (random access memory) And the processor ,it also controls everything on the computer like the hard drive ,disk drive , flopy drive and so on. Its what sends thing to your monitor . If your trying to look for it is in the middle of your Computer . If it ever breaks your looking from 400$ to thousands of dollars. If you like your computer and want to buy one if it breaks make sure that it will fit the processor but it might be a wise decision to buy a New computer because if you don’t know how to install one you may have to pay just as much as a new computer to instal the package . With Your new computer you can send all your files to your new hard drive if By connecting you old hard drive as a slave and your files and programs Will be there when you bootup your new computer .

    Computer part: Sound Card
It has the input and output of sound signals for the computer. It acts and responds the all different computer programs, whether it’s a game, or f it’s a recording program. Some computers have an expansion card built in, while some need to have an expansion card.. A main part in a sound card, is polyphony. What it is used for, is to be able to play more than just one sound at once, it can play multiple sounds.

Sound cards are colour coded, so that people don’t connect them the wrong way, and for each some colours, they have symbols. The colours are: Pink, green, blue, dark/brown, orange, and yellow. The symbols that are used are symbols like arrows, and holes, which can also create a different sound wave coming out of the computers speakers.

Sound cards can be fast or slow, depending on the quality, not so much the price. Some sound cards can range from $10-20, but can also go all the way up to $330. The price has a lot to o with the sound quality

    What does the part do?
How does the component interact with the rest of the computer?
The Power supply unit (P S U) is the part that supplies power to the computer A power supply is made to convert Voltages Into a lower level switch the computer needs to run .

What are some of the features?
What specs determine the quality of the component? (size, speed, space, look, price)
Good power supplies are low in noise and some are Energy saving witch causes less heat in the computer .
Some even when you have loads and loads running on your computer it still gives straight -12v .
Most power supplies come in black silverish gray But you can get red , blue ect
Power supplies come in different sizes like some are thinner then others and may have more then one fan .
Prices for power supplies go up and down in price from real low from 15 dollars and up to the hundredths.

What is the price range of these components?
The Power supply units coat from about 15 dollars all the way up to the hundredths .
The Most Expensive is not always the best. Look In to Stuff Before you buy
