Currently there are a number of internet companies that need people to develop more content for their sites. They do reconize that by keeping thier users on their site longer that they generate more ad revenue and retain them more. Its simple the more value that you provide for a user the more they will visit, the more they visit the more they click on your ads, the more they click on your ads the more you make! Larger and developing sites are running into the problem that they can only develop so much content with a limited number of people at a certain speed.
To resolve this issue they have opted to outsource some of the work to free lance writers. Who can be a free lance writer??? Just about anyone! All you need is a little computer knowledge and the time to devote to usually about 2-3 posts per week.
From my initial impressions most of the companies I’ve seen so far seem quite up front and reputable. They layout everything up front (payment, expectation etc.) and they don’t advertise as a get rich quick scheme, they advertise honest resonable rates.
There seems to be two (and half) payment structures. The first is hourly. They expect that you write say 3 posts a week and estimate that you spend about 30 minutes per post and then they compensate you on a monthly basis at an hourly rate. Rates seem to be competetive I’v seen them ranging from 12-18 dollars an hour. The other method is based on your popularity and quality of writing. I.E. If you drive alot of visitors to your site you get paid more. The other is a combination of the two methods and once you reach a certain amount of traffic they pay you more and offer you a portion of the ad revenue.
For people starting out I would recomend an hourly rate then ones you either establish your fan base or can advertise your blog externally switch to the perfomance based systems. Or just find one that offers both.
More specific links to come as I perform more research into different methods.
